Welcome to Music Together of Modesto!
We are looking forward to sharing this award-winning music with you and your child. The following information should be helpful in answering many frequently asked questions; please take a few moments to read and save for future reference. You can find additional information on the website under “Enrolled Families”. Music Together® Mixed Ages will run 10 weeks. Please refer to the website for class schedules and to the website calendar for end dates. These are subject to change should any class cancellations occur.
PARTICIPATION: In class it is very important for the adults to participate! Children learn their attitudes and motivations from you, and you can help them become enthusiastic music-makers just by enjoying the class and participating fully. You will be an excellent model regardless of your musical ability. Just relax and have fun!
YOUR CHILD: The most basic rule of thumb is to let your child be free to explore, to play and to discover. Children have the amazing ability to teach themselves through play; an ability we do not wish to disrupt by giving too much direction. Allow your child to experience the class in his or her own unique way- whether that’s by moving constantly, sitting and staring, tasting, rather than playing the instruments, etc. Each child is busily processing the musical information, even if that’s not apparent during class activities. We encourage you to trust this process, relax and let your child be, and you will begin to see new musical behaviors emerging as each semester progresses.
TIMELINESS: We make every effort to begin and end classes on time. It is so important for you to be prompt, as it is often very difficult for a child to enter a class already in session. Please make a point to be here for the Hello Song, so your child feels properly welcomed. Running late? Sing the Hello Song to your child on the way to class.
MAKE-UPS: We understand that sometimes families need to skip a week due to illness or travel. Not to worry! We offer 1-2 make-up classes at the end of each semester.
SING, DON’T TALK: Although Music Together uses an informal teaching approach; this does not mean that we are casual. We especially ask the adults to maintain focus and avoid talking during or between class activities. During class activities your active participation is vital. The time in between activities is a time to listen, for often a child will spontaneously sing into the silence. Talking will only distract your child from the musical experience we are so eagerly creating.
FOOD & TOYS: Please try to leave toys in the stroller, or car so as not to distract your child or others. If your child needs juice or a snack, please take them out of the circle, to avoid inspiring other young snackers. Nursing your baby is totally welcome- an especially good time for this is during our lullaby before the end of class.
CELL PHONES: We request that you not bring your cell phones into the circle, and that you set them on mute during the class if at all possible. Our time together each week is brief, and it is so important to your child that you be totally present. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
GUEST POLICY: There is never any charge for visiting adults, so bring the grandparents! Young siblings or cousins may attend once free of charge; thereafter guest fees apply: $20 per child per visit, due on or before the day the child attends the class. The guest fee always applies to visiting children who are non-family members. Please notify the teacher in advance, if you are expecting guests so that the instructor can make sure there is space available.
ILLNESS/COVID POLICY: At Music Together of Modesto, the health and safety of everyone who comes to class is very important to us. If you or your child are feeling sick or have symptoms, please stay home so as not to share your germs. Please schedule a makeup class. We will follow state guidelines in regards to masking and meeting indoors together. Please let your teacher know if you have any concerns.
OTHER CONCERNS: We desire your experience with Music Together to be both fun and enriching. Please communicate with your teacher should any problems arise. Your feedback is invaluable to the program.
